The Swedish and Norwegian National Hip Registers show that the use of antibiotic-loaded cements in primary operations reduces the risk of revisions and consequently results in cost savings.4,5 The Norwegian Hip Register shows specifically that the combination of antibiotic-loaded cement and systemic antibiotics, given on the day of operation, results in the lowest risk of revision. Double-loaded antibiotic bone cements decrease the risk for complications such as re-infections, resulting in even further cost savings.4
